Ray’s challenge was a disability called polio. His polio prevented him from being able to control his legs. Ray believed that no man has limits. So he trained on his own to build leg strength. When Ray went to college at Perdue, he tried out for, and made the college track team, where he excelled.
He went on to compete in the Olympics, where he first he won a bronze medal in the 50 meter dash. Later he competed and he won two gold medals, one in a track event, and another in the standing long jump. He also won eight additional gold medals including those for the 50 meter dash, long jump, standing long jump, and standing height jump.
When he is not writing articles for My-Say, 6th grader Devyn James of Central Middle School, Anne Arundel County can be found playing soccer, football, or tennis.
